New 2018 Volvo S60 officially revealed

The premium sedan is the first model from the manufacturer to be built in the US and comes with a range of petrol engines – but no diesel.

Volvo has taken the covers off the new S60, which is the brand’s first car to be built in the United States.

This is the first Volvo to be sold without a diesel engine option and continues on with the manufacturer’s plan for all of its models to be electrified by 2019.

The sports saloon will be available with one of four engines – the T5 and T6 petrols, and the T6 and T8 petrol plug-in hybrids – with the hybrids coming with all-wheel drive. The T8 powertrain can be modified as part of the Polestar Engineered pack to add more power – up to 409bhp in fact.

It shares the Scalable Product Architecture and safety technology of the other 60 and 90 models – making it one of the safest cars on the road.

Inside, the interior layout is almost identical to other modern Volvo models, with the cockpit’s centrepiece the portrait Sensus touchscreen infotainment system that can be connected to smartphones through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The S60 will also be available on the Care by Volvo subscription service that allows owners to pay a monthly fee that covers all the ownership costs, apart from fuel – much like a mobile phone contract.

Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive officer of Volvo Cars, said: “The new S60 is one of the most exciting Volvo cars we’ve ever made. It is a true driver’s car that gives us a strong position in the US and China saloon markets, creating more growth opportunities for Volvo Cars.”

Henrik Green, senior vice president of research and development, said: “The active chassis and drive modes deliver excellent control and an engaged performance that makes this a driver’s car.

“It also brings the acclaimed technology from our 90 series and other 60 series cars into this segment, making it one of the best sports saloons on the market.”

The S60 will be built at the South Carolina based Charleston factory, which was also opened yesterday.
