Success for Audi and Volkswagen in latest Euro NCAP testing

Audi A6 and Volkswagen Touareg score five-stars in the latest round of safety tests.

It’s success for Audi and Volkswagen in the latest round of Euro NCAP, with the firm’s latest models returning near-perfect scores.

The 2019 Audi A6 achieved five stars on the test, with 93 per cent for its adult occupant protection, 85 per cent for child protection, 81 per cent in pedestrian safety and 76 per cent for the level of assistance technology fitted to the saloon.

As standard, the A6 boasts bags of safety kit — including pre-collision warning, parking sensors, a rear-view camera and adaptive cruise control. It’s quite simply the most advanced form of the saloon yet.

Volkswagen’s new Touareg also scored the elusive five-star rating — achieving 89 per for adult occupancy safety, 86 per cent for child occupants, 72 per cent for pedestrians and 81 per cent for its safety tech.

Other models tested this time around included the Ford Tourneo Connect — which scored four-stars — and the new Suzuki Jimny, with the chunky off-roader achieving a three-star score.

Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general of Euro NCAP, said:

“Overall, these latest results demonstrate that, as Euro NCAP’s test protocols evolve and become more demanding, a five-star rating remains an achievable although challenging objective for the auto industry.

“It is particularly positive and welcome that manufacturers are performing well in the assessment of vulnerable road user protection systems such as AEB for cyclists. Euro NCAP has now tested six models which feature this life saving technology. These driver assistance systems are the building blocks for potential automation in the future. Importantly they offer tangible safety benefits today.”
