Nissan Leaf tops European electric cars sales

The latest version of the electric hatchback has sold more than 37,000 units since it went on sale in October 2017.

The Nissan Leaf has topped the electric car sales table in Europe for the first half of 2018, continuing its form as the world’s best-selling electric vehicle.

Between January and June, 18,000 orders were placed for the Leaf across the continent – adding to the 19,000 units sold after the second generation model was introduced in October 2017.

Fitted with an improved powertrain over the previous model, the Leaf comes with a 40 kilowatt-hour battery that offers a 168-mile range according to the European WLTP emissions and economy standard.

Gareth Dunsmore, Nissan Europe electric vehicle director, said: “The momentum continues to build for electric cars. The new Leaf has transformed the experience of driving, with technologies like e-Pedal, capable of reducing braking interaction by up to 90%, showing more customers the benefits of electric mobility that Nissan offers.”

As Nissan’s flagship model for safety, the Leaf has been specced with the semi-autonomous ProPilot driving system 72 per cent of the time, and with that drivers can allow the car to follow the traffic ahead without much intervention and reduce fatigue.

Since 2010, the Leaf has been sold over 340,000 times around the globe – with the 100,000thunit sold in Europe delivered earlier this year.
